We were contacted by a resident of Tanglewood who was unhappy with the appearance of his front yard. The existing drive was nothing more than a massive concrete slab that left little room for any vegetation other than small patches of grass and San Augustin a magnolia that was very close to cracking the back wall next to the house. The landscape was excellent drainage, which in most cases is a good thing. However, in this case topsoil retained very little rain, so for at least six months of the year the grass would wilt and turn brown. Our client wanted the grass replaced by planting lush vegetation that would depend various shades of green with flowers in season, and she also wanted a shift from bricks that add a touch of typical Old World reminiscent of days riding and transport past centuries.
We started our project by carefully studying a number of late 19th century photographs of roads and brick sidewalks. We studied models of masonry used at the time of the creation of streets that were made entirely brick, but, by necessity, also had to provide humans and horses with a smooth and safe travel. We showed the owner one pattern in particular that caught our eye, a style known in the masonry as the link works. This model uses only bricks laid on their sides, so that the parties face close up. This creates a smooth surface to walk on, but the ends of the bricks do not line up with those in adjacent rows. When you look quickly at a row of brick bond running, your eyes often deceive you into thinking the bricks are competing against each others for a common destination, hence the use of the word "race" in the name of the pattern. The unconscious feeling of movement is ideal for building a gateway that leads into a turn, or in a corner or through a garden in the front yard.
A row of bricks of any kind is normally a period or a historical piece, and it should always look as simple as possible to maintain its original theme. In the case of this project, for example, we have avoided any visible use of concrete or mortar when laying bricks in the driveway. Instead, we have established a concrete foundation covered Then the mortar, and we laid the bricks carefully by hand to make sure we captured the essence of a late 19th century the street. We used only the sand-covered pavement joint to fill the space between the bricks. This created the illusion that the bricks are loosely defined together, still walk on them, you felt a firm surface as safe as any modern concrete.
We really wanted to highlight the color and pattern of this new avenue of bricks first time visitors and returning guests. To do this, we planted a row of boxwood for a frame like a picture frame is used to accent a beautiful painting. It is a common technique in landscaping formal boxwood can be used as to enclose all the flower gardens and shrubs for decorative fountains and sculptures. In this case, planting a row of box next to the outer edge Gateway formed an acute angle to the right of the intersection of green and red-just enough to catch the eye and force him to run along the entire brick way to the door of the house. Surrounding vegetation was planted in this mirror, and planting of grass selective dwarf monkey were used at the base of our framework to hide the stems of boxwood and focus more structure and style of the brick.

Zoysia also has a much finer blade than San Augustine grass, and it is comfortable and safe to walk on two in shoes or bare feet.
To create a border to the south side of the property, we planted a row of Japanese yew continue all the way to the wall in the back. This forced my eyes to stay in the front yard and focus on the alternating layers of green and floral colors seasonal were set out in symmetrical patterns, patterns of motion curves. We planted plum pleased to add a touch of Burgundy that would last all year, and introduces us to provide Caladiums flowers in the winter months.
The end north of the front yard, all that separates the residence from the neighboring property was what remained of the old driveway and a thin line of San Augustine grass. We left a part of the roadway for parking, and we replaced the grass in San Augustin with a linear planting of boxwood and grass mondo. We then raised the barrier to natural crepe myrtles placed to compliment the Japanese yew on the opposite side of the court, and we planted a large tree that we needed as a balance between home and surrounding landscape features.
